Benfica chief considers stepping down | World Soccer

Benfica chairman Luis Filipe Vieira has suggested that he might give up his position at the Portuguese giants following the on-pitch death of Miklos Feher.

Vieira revealed how badly he had been effected by the Hungarian midfielder’s tragic death and is how he is now seriously considering quitting the Lisbon club.

“Unfortunately, in soccer it’s only when things like this take place that people unite and try to bring out their best,” he said.

“It’s worth it for everybody to reflect, and I certainly am going to reflect with my family in terms of the future, of what my presence will be with Benfica.

“People have a way of being in their lives. I have one, and Benfica is not going to make me change it.”

Feher collapsed during Benfica’s match with Vitoria Guimaraes and was rushed to hospital where he died of cardio-respiratory arrest. Benfica’s club doctor, Joao Paulo Almeida revealed that Feher only reacted for a matter of seconds when he tried to revive him on the pitch.

“He already had his eyelids dilated. He did not respond to any stimulus,” said Almeida.

When asked whether the Hungarian could have taken any performance enhancing drugs, he added: “At Benfica we don’t use those substances.”

Tissue examinations are being carried out on Feher to try and determine the cause of his death after an inconclusive autopsy.
