Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted Manchester United will try once again to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves in the summer.

United have twice been rebuffed by Bayern for the England international midfielder, but Ferguson believes Hargreaves could perform a valuable function for United.

“I think with Hargreaves, if we’d have got him, we’d be bringing in a young English centre-midfield player,” said Ferguson.

“You’ve got to remember Paul Scholes is 32. Although I think Paul can play for quite a time, you know.

“But none the less I think we’re doing the right thing if we’d have got him, we were doing the right thing in protecting our future. Unfortunately we didn’t get him.”

When asked whether United would make a new move for Hargreaves at the end of the season, Ferguson replied: “Maybe.”

One concern for Ferguson is the appointment of Ottmar Hitzfeld as Bayern coach, which he believes could help persuade Hargreaves to stay in Germany.

“Everyone’s got their own ambition to improve their club, particularly when a new manager comes they give him the support the lad needs,” he continued.

“Because it’s Ottmar Hitzfeld and he had a great experience with Bayern in the past, they’ll listen to him.

“That’s an obvious worry for us. We don’t know until we get down to talking to them if that does happen.”
